In our perfection crazy, goal driven world, it’s easy to get ensnared by our thoughts and fears, which can stifle creativity and hinder personal growth. As a Christian counsellor, understanding these thought traps and recognizing the power of centering practices is crucial. By intentionally creating down time to center ourselves, you can unlock unexpected creative doors, leading to a life of greater freedom and fulfillment.

Understanding Thought Traps and Fears

Thought Traps:

These are irrational patterns of thinking, like catastrophizing and overgeneralization, that lead to negativity and anxiety. They can misinterpret events and diminish self-worth.

Fear:

Often underlying thought traps, fear of failure, rejection, or the unknown can paralyze us, stifling creativity and potential.

C.S. Lewis insightfully noted, "Wrong thinking leads to wrong emotions, which lead to wrong actions, which lead to further wrong thinking. And fear is one of the most basic wrong emotions. It is the emotion of the herd, the cattle-stampede, the lemming-instinct."

This reminds us that our fears and misconceptions can blind and blind us to profound truths that offer us freedom and hope.

Biblical Perspective on Thought and Fear

Renewing the Mind:

Romans 12:2 calls for the renewal of our minds, replacing negative thought patterns with God's truth. Philippians 4:8 encourages focusing on whatever is true, noble, right, and pure.

Trusting in God:

Scriptures remind us that God is our refuge (Psalm 46:1) and that perfect love drives out fear (1 John 4:18). Trust in God's sovereignty helps us face fears courageously.

Dallas Willard emphasized, "The first and most basic thing we can and must do is to keep God before our minds. This is the fundamental secret of caring for our souls."

By focusing on God, we can transform our thinking and overcome fear.

Okay so here's the thing if we could all just do what the Bible and Spirit lead insperational men and woman suggest we would all be well... perfect. I'm not and I am pretty darn sure you know you are not. But why is it so hard to change our thoughts and feeling to do what God is saying through Jesus and His deciples?

Why it's so hard.

Accepting Jesus and being born again, receiving baptism, and being renewed by the Holy Spirit can bring about many positive changes. However, the challenges of developing mentally and physically in a fallen world can be demanding. We were designed by God to love and trust. The experinces we encounter from the moment we are born challege that design to the nth degree. We are forced even in the most loving families to come to terms with deep disapointments, traumas, rejections, missunderstandings and the general unfairness of life.

The right care givers can help a child use lifes challenges to develope a strong sence of self and resilance. However, it does not take much for negative circumstance to leave long lasting wounds resulting in deep subconcious fears, thoughts and beliefs.

In a nutshell, the beliefs we develop throughout our lives can create obstacles that prevent us from seeing the truth as God perceives us and the world around us. So, without 'knowing it,' we subconsciously disagree with what the Bible says because there are parts of us that are invested in protecting the fragmented and fractured parts of our egos.

Helping people discover these deeper part and their roles in self-protection is what I do as a counsellor and not matter who I speak to we all have them.

In my next blog I'm going to be outlining some of the things you can to recognise these inner conflicted parts through the practice of centering. Giving you a deeper understanding of yourself and enabling you to recieve greater revelation of who you really are in Christ.
