Faking it to make it!
Faking it to make it!

The beginning of a new year is often seen as a time of renewal and fresh starts. Yet, for many, it can feel like little more than a continuation of the struggles of the previous year. The disconnect between societal expectations of “new beginnings” and personal realities can leave individuals feeling stuck, unmotivated, or hopeless. However, hope is not something we simply stumble upon—it’s something we can cultivate through intentional actions, psychological insights, and spiritual grounding.

Psychologist Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor and author of Man’s Search for Meaning, wrote,

“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”

This powerful statement highlights the importance of perspective. Even when external circumstances remain the same, we can find meaning and purpose by shifting how we view and respond to challenges. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), one of the most effective modern therapeutic approaches, echoes this sentiment by teaching individuals to reframe negative thought patterns and focus on what is within their control.

From a spiritual perspective, the Bible offers timeless wisdom on finding hope amidst trials. In Jeremiah 29:11, God reassures us,

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

I know that the Lord has plans for me, even when life feels uncertain, and there is a greater purpose at work but trusting in that plan can feel hopeless at times. How do I get to the point where Gods word does provide comfort and encouragement when everything else feels overwhelming?

Another biblical reminder comes from Isaiah 40:31:

“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

This verse emphasizes the importance of patience and faith as we navigate difficult seasons. Renewal is not instant—it’s a process that requires perseverance and reliance on a higher power. It also my require you to find a way to do less rather than more.

Combining these perspectives, it becomes clear that hope is not passive; it is an active choice. Psychologist Charles Snyder, known for his hope theory, described hope as a combination of agency (the belief in our ability to influence outcomes) and pathways (the ability to identify routes to achieve our goals). This aligns beautifully with the Bible’s encouragement to walk by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). Whether through therapy, prayer, self-reflection or finding the rest you need, the journey toward hope requires a active decision, but the rewards—peace, resilience, and purpose—are worth it.

Remember, hope is always within reach, and you are not alone in this journey. It's important to recognize that what you're feeling is completely normal. If you're struggling, don't hesitate to reach out for support. Connecting with someone who understands can make all the difference. Take that first step today—seek help from a friend, family member, or a professional. You deserve to feel better, and together, we can find a path forward!
